Annual-growth planning questions

What annual growth rate should I use?

Compare used storage from consistent dates one year apart. If no history exists, choose a cautious scenario based on your workload and review the estimate after several months.

Why does the calculator compound growth?

Every year’s added data becomes part of the following year’s starting total. Compounding represents that accumulating base more accurately than repeatedly adding a percentage of today’s files.

What is the one-time import field?

It covers data you already know will move to the NAS, such as old external drives or cloud archives. The tool adds it before applying future growth.

Is the uncertainty allowance the same as free-space headroom?

No. Uncertainty covers an imperfect forecast. Headroom keeps part of the NAS usable capacity free for operation, snapshots and unexpected needs.

Does this result include RAID overhead?

No. This tool estimates future files. Use the full Storage Calculator to translate that usable-data need into a RAID drive configuration.

Should backup growth use the same percentage?

Often yes when backups retain the same expanding dataset, but retention and versioning can change the requirement. Plan backup capacity separately.

Can storage growth be negative?

It can after deliberate cleanup or retention changes, but this planner uses nonnegative rates for conservative purchasing. Model cleanup as a lower starting data total after it is safely completed.

How often should I update the forecast?

Quarterly or at least annually, and whenever a major workload changes—such as adding cameras, beginning 4K production or migrating a cloud archive.
