Home Media Archive questions

Should an eight-bay archive use RAID 5 or RAID 6?

RAID 6 is often preferable for large drives because it tolerates two failures. RAID 5 provides more capacity but tolerates only one drive failure.

Can I start with fewer drives?

Usually, but expansion rules depend on the RAID type and NAS software. Confirm the migration path before creating the first pool.

Does 10GbE make movies stream better?

Normal playback rarely needs it. 10GbE helps large imports, backups, editing, several users and fast workstation transfers.

Should I use one huge volume?

One volume is simple, but separate pools or volumes can isolate workloads. Avoid needless complexity unless it improves recovery or administration.

Are NVMe cache drives necessary?

Not for sequential movie playback. NVMe is more useful for applications, metadata, thumbnails, databases or active project storage.

Can an expansion unit hold the backup?

It is still connected to the same NAS and often shares administration and physical risks. A truly separate backup should survive loss of the main system.

How much free space should I keep?

Aim for at least 20–30% during planning. Snapshots, indexing, temporary files and future imports consume space beyond the media itself.

How do I protect family photos and home video?

Keep at least three copies, including one offsite. Test restores and preserve original files separately from edited versions.

Are Amazon drive bundles safe to buy?
